NRC Lands in Teso: Title Race Heads for Eastern Fireworks

Round 4 set for Soroti & Katakwi, July 23–25

The Uganda National Rally Championship is back in Eastern Uganda, and this time it’s personal.

For the first time in over 5 decades, the roar of rally engines returns to Teso as Soroti and Katakwi districts host Round 4 of the 2026 NRC. It’s not just another event — it’s shaping up to be the round that could make or break title dreams.

Hosted by Eastern Motor Club and sanctioned by FMU, the 3-day battle will push crews across 289km of some of the country’s quickest and most punishing gravel. Ten stages. No room for mistakes.

Title fight on the line

At the top, Hassan Alwi and co-driver Musa Nsubuga lead with 177 points. Consistency has been their weapon so far.

But breathing down their necks is Duncan Mubiru on 129 points, with Jonas Kansiime in third on 93. The gap is closing, and Teso’s fast, flowing roads reward bravery and precision — the perfect recipe for an upset.

Friday kicks off with 4 stages, capped by a night Super Special. The headline test is the 17.16km IUEA Stage, while the 10.65km Segamu 14 offers a sharp contrast.

Saturday’s finale in Katakwi builds to the 18.09km Steadfast Forwarders — the longest stage of the weekend — before crews finish with the 13.60km MMC Power Stage where bonus points are up for grabs.

A homecoming 56 years in the making

This isn’t just about points. It’s history.

The NRC hasn’t run competitively in Teso since 1970. That year, the East African Safari Rally claimed the life of Ugandan driver Major David Ndahura when his Ford Cortina was swept away at the flooded Tiva Bridge. His co-driver survived.

That tragedy, plus another fatality during recce near Nairobi, underlined how brutal that Safari was — only 44 of 91 starters finished.

FMU didn’t rush back. General Secretary Reynolds Kibira says it took 2 years of groundwork: a 2024 exhibition in Soroti, then rally and bike events in Katakwi in 2025. They tested roads, medics, and emergency plans. With better health facilities and evacuation routes now in place, Teso was finally green-lit — in line with the National Sports Act 2023 push to take sports beyond Kampala.
